7. Simulate


!!! At this point, save your file with a new file name. You will need to go back to this step. !!!


1/9 To simulate the model you will use the simulation tool on the upper left of the 3D window. You can either select the down arrow to simulate or use the space bar. Selecting the arrow again or the space bar will stop the simulation. When the simulation is running the arrow will turn blue and the icon next to the arrow will be come a hand that you can select and use to pinch or drag the surfaces. 2/9 Before simulation if you select a surface and right click you will see a set of menu options that allow you to edit the reaction of individual surface. The ones to not are solidify which you can use to make a surface more rigid with out edit the material properties, and freeze which will allow you to freeze surfaces so they do not simulate. This is helpful if you want to simulate only certain portions of the model at once. 3/9 In this menu you can also edit the arrangement. This will allow you to reset a surface or entire arrangement. Bringing the simulation back to its starting position before the gravity simulator. 4/9 In the screen shot the model has been simulated all at once. Meaning no surfaces where frozen or held in place during the simulation. This created areas of puckering or seam stress where two materials of different properties or thickness where trying to stitch together. To prevent this you can simulate in parts by freezing surfaces while simulating others. Note when the model is all one material with the same thickness this is not necessary. 5/9 The next few screen shots show simulation in parts to allow for better seam to seam connections. After all seam connections are simulated it is best to unfreeze all and simulate at once if only for a few sections. This way the modeling and its parts are reacting all at once. As it would under gravity. 6/9 Notice all the surface accept for the yellow triangle are light blue. This is because they have been frozen by selecting the surfaces and right clicking and selecting freeze in the drop down menu. In the screen shot the yellow surface has been simulated. Notice how the seam connection is not no longer puckering. For the next surface, the yellow surface is frozen and the gray surface is unfrozen and simulated. 7/9 In this screen shot the gray surface has been simulated. Notice the seam to seam connection between this piece and the frozen triangle are no longer puckering. In the next screen shot both the yellow triangle and the gray surface are unfrozen and simulated together. 8/9 Here the triangle and the gray surface are simulated together. This is critical so the pieces act under gravity all together. Note you can unfreeze by selecting a surface and right clicking within the drop down menu it will show unfreeze. 9/9 Continue to work through all surfaces for your project.
