6. Different Materials

1/5 Once all materials are imported as instructed in the previous section start to apply the materials to individual surfaces. 2/5 Select desired surface, once selected in the properties menu select the material under the fabric tab. Note the materials are grayed out until they are selected and used as a surface in the project. 3/5 Continue adding the material to surfaces. Notice each material has a different thickness and set of attributes so be sure to think about the connections and the physical reactions of materials next to one another. 4/5 Continue adding the material to surfaces. This will need to be coordinated while you simulate the project as these connections and surface material arrangements will change the physics of the model.



7. Cut Outs
 
1/8 To cut surfaces you can use any of the internal shape tools in the 2D window. 2/8 To make polygons select the internal polygon tool and draw a shape on surface. The dimensions of each side will appear as you start to draw the shape. 3/8 To make rectangular internal shapes select the internal rectangle tool and with the mouse select within the desired surface. 4/8 Once the surface is selected a create rectangle box window will appear, here you can select the size of the rectangle. Once adjusted click okay and you can move the rectangle where desired on the surface by selecting the brown outline directly. 5/8 After you have placed the internal shapes where desired select the brown outlines and right click. A menu will appear and select cut. 6/8 The internal shape will then cut from the larger shape and offset either above or below the surface. 7/8 This shape can be deleted and then you are left with a cut or hole in the surface. 8/8 To tape the surface select the seam taping tool from the 2D window and then select the edges you wish to tape in the 2D window. The edges will highlight yellow to indicate they are selected to be taped.





1. Adding Corrugation

1/16 To start begin with base file stitched but not simulated. Decided on a surface you wish to make into a built material. 2/16 Once surface is selected determine the number of cells or subdivisions within the corrugation. Is it dense, loose etc. the number of internal rectangles is dependent on this decision. Here the rectangle will be divided into 4 sections. Once the spacing between cells is determined draw an internal rectangle on the surface selected with the correct dimensions. 3/16 Copy and paste the internal rectangle 4 times. This results in three lines within the center of the surface that the perpendicular cell walls can stitch to. 4/16 Copy the entire surface over in the 2D window. This will create a duplicate surface in both windows. 5/16 To create the cell walls determine the height of the thickened surface. Again is it thin or thick, rigid or droopy? A shorter height will result in a more rigid material while a taller height would be a bit more droopy. Once the height is selected draw a rectangle the width of the surface with the height determined based on the characteristics of you’ve selected. Here the rectangle is not very tall. 6/16 Notice it drew the rectangle above the surface. You will need to move it down and over to align with the internal lines. 7/16 Move surface down and over to align with internal lines. 8/16 After the rectangle is aligned copy it 5 times so that there is one rectangle for every internal line as well as on each end of the surface. 9/16 Once copied move the 5 rectangles down toward the surface. Be sure to leave space in-between the cell edges and the bottom surface as you will need space to stitch. 10/16 Next move the duplicate bottom surface to the top of the cell rectangles. Be sure to leave space at the top between the surface edge and the cell edges. 11/16 Once the top surface is placed slightly move the top, bottom and celled surfaces over. This is to not over crowd the stitching touching the surface with the window. 12/16 The construction should look similar to this, with the cells equally spaced and located directly under internal lines that their receptive edges can be stitched to. Select the top edge and stitch it to the top edge of the celled rectangle. 13/16 Next select the bottom edge and stitch it to the bottom edge of the celled rectangle. Repeat this for all the celled rectangles. 14/16 The final stitching should look similar to the screen shot. Be sure not to place the top and bottom surfaces too far from the rectangular celled pieces. 15/16 Freeze the other surfaces to simulate only the corrugated material. 16/16 Simulate to the desired affect. Note the space between the cells is rather large so the corrugation slumps to hold up the top surface. If you want a more rigid surface decrease the spacing and keep the height short.
 
1. Adding Pancake Pleating

 
1/9 To start select section that will be pleated. 2/9 Move these surfaces in the 2D and 3D window. To allow space to copy and move additional surfaces next to original. 3/9 Select and isolate surface, while freezing all other surfaces. Copy this surface and place it stacked next to the original. 4/9 Stitch the outside edges to one another 5/9 After stitching all edges the surface should look similar to the screen shot 6/9 Once this is complete you can assign different materials to each surface. Keep in mind that different surfaces will react against each other. So here there are only to,this will prevent internal crashing. 7/9 After adjusting the materials simulate the set of surfaces. 8/9 The reaction should look similar to the screen shot.
